GKV
This is the abbreviation for Germinating, and Kilning Vessels.
The vessels are constructed from stainless steel, and represent
the most modern method of manufacturing malt today. Chitted malt
from the steeping vessels is transferred to the GKV where it is
germinated for 4 – 6 days in bed depths of approximately
1 metre. Growing conditions are maintained with humidified air
and regular turning of the grain to prevent rootlet matting, and
to ensure homogenous results. The floor of the GKV rotates around
a central column and gently presents the germinating barley (now
referred to as “green malt”) bed to the bank of ribbon
turners which gently lift the grain from “bottom to top”.
On completion of germination, the humidified air is stopped, and
is replaced with heated air from the kiln burners. The drying and
curing process now occurs, bringing moisture levels and malt colours,
and other parameters to specification requirements.
These vessels are capable of producing batches of approx. 100 tonnes,
and 300 tonnes of malt at one time. This is clearly an advantage
for large users of single specification malts.
