Laboratory
All Simpson’s production sites are equipped with barley
intake laboratories to enable Intake Supervisors to quality
control the raw material and ensure that the barley matches
the purchase specification in all respects. Key parameters
such as Variety, Moisture, Protein, Germination Capacity, Screenings,
Admixture, Condition, and Absence of Insects are all checked
before the barley is accepted.
At Head Office in Berwick upon Tweed, the Group Central
Laboratory is located. The facilities include a sophisticated
micro-malting plant for establishing the ideal process conditions
for each stage of the malting process. The malts are fully
analysed to the latest Institute of Brewing, or Analytica
EBC Methods. In addition a separate laboratory exists at
Tivetshall for testing speciality roasted malts.
Simpsons is a participant in the European-wide Malt Analytes
Proficiency Scheme (MAPS), thus providing a useful flow of
information on accuracy of malt analytical data from many
different sources.
