Malt of the Month – Red Rye Crystal

This month, we’re celebrating one of our extra special malts and grains, Red Rye Crystal malt. Known for its deep ruby red colour, and for creating depth of flavour, it’s a beauty of a malt!

Crystal Malts are speciality grains – they add a particular taste and flavour to beers. We take premium malts which are then roasted and cooled. This process produces hardened crystal-like sugars that give that familiar sugary texture and taste.

Taste & flavour
Red Rye Crystal malt adds an interesting sweet bread flavour to many beers. It produces a nutty flavour when used at higher volumes.


Best in Red Beers and Rye Beers, Red Rye Crystal malt works well used up to 10%.


Red Rye Crystal malt counts Adnams amongst its fans. Head Brewer, Fergus Fitzgerald, told us: “I love Red Rye Crystal. At low amounts, it adds subtle bready notes and at higher amounts, we get a great nutty flavour as well as a fantastic warm red colour.”
