Following a thirty-two year service, today Simpsons Malt employee John Mitchell (Ship Ahoy!) bid a fond farewell as he retired from the family-owned business.
Joining the company in 1984 in the role of Shipping Manager before becoming Export Manager in 1996, John will be missed by the whole team at the Berwick-upon-Tweed HQ.
During his time with the company, John worked closely with brewers and distillers and managed the logistics of transporting malt from Simpsons Malt sites in Berwick-upon-Tweed and Tivetshall in Norfolk all across the globe.
John has seen massive changes at the maltsters over the years, he explains: “When I was first employed at Simpsons Malt, the malt was mainly delivered locally in Simpsons Malt lorries and vans: more recently I have transported our malt in 2500 tonne vessels across the world. It’s been a fantastic company to work for and great to see how much it has grown.
“I will be sad to leave but I’m looking forward to having more time for my garden and hill walking. My wife and I have also planned a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Canada later in the year.”
Everyone at Simpsons Malt wishes him all the best in retirement
