Our Tivetshall Maltings is situated in the heart of East Anglia, a geographical region that comprises the counties of Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.
Tivetshall has been producing malt since 1872 and the site was one of four malting sites – alongside Pontefract, Abingdon and Ditchingham – acquired by the company from Grand Metropolitan in 1986.
With Tivetshall unique among the four malting sites in that it had roasting drums producing speciality malts, once production volumes increased at both the company’s Tweed Valley Maltings and Tivetshall, the sites at Pontefract, Abingdon and Ditchingham were sold.
Today, Tivetshall is the company’s hub for producing malt for the craft brewing sector, with malt delivered from this plant to breweries across the UK, as well as our extensive network of distributors all over the world.
About Tivetshall
Tivetshall St Margaret is a small village in rural south Norfolk, around a 30-minute drive south from the county’s biggest city, Norwich.
As well as being a county that is renowned for producing high-quality English barley, Norfolk is home to The Broads, a sprawling national park known for its waterways, exotic wildlife and picturesque landscape. The county’s 90 miles of coastline and popular seaside resorts also make it a UK tourism hotspot.
Our Tivetshall Maltings is situated around 25 miles inland and the site borders the main railway line between Norwich and London Liverpool Street station, with the rail journey from the nearest station, Diss, to the UK’s capital city taking around 90 minutes.
Our Roast House
Our Tivetshall Maltings is home to our state-of-the-art Roast House, which is where our renowned crystal and roasted malts are made.
With five roasting drums and decades of expertise, we’re one of the few UK maltsters to produce speciality malts entirely in-house.
This ensures exceptional consistency, flavour development and quality across every batch, helping brewers across the world produce outstanding beers.
Meeting brewers' needs
While Tivetshall is best known for its speciality malts, it also produces high-quality base malts through the traditional malting process, with five germination & kilning vessels (GKVs) also on-site.
Additionally, Tivetshall is home to our dedicated Bagging Hall. Opened in 2015, it is here where the malt is cleaned, screened and prepared for packaging in either 25kg or one-tonne tote bags.
We also offer a milling service, giving brewers the opportunity to receive either crushed or whole malt to meet their requirements.
After passing through the bagging line, the 25kg bags are then palletised for one-tonne shipments to breweries across the UK as well as our global distribution network.
A welcoming site
We’re passionate about sharing the story behind our products and we regularly welcome brewing customers to Tivetshall to give them a first-hand look at the malting process, from barley intake to bagging.
Wherever possible, we also pair these visits with trips to local farms who we directly contract malting barley with, helping brewers connect with the growers behind their ingredients and better understand the challenges growers face from season to season.
This farm-to-malt experience not only showcases the quality and care that goes into every batch of malt produced, but also enables us to strengthen relationships across the supply chain.
