Careers

As an independent, fifth-generation, family business, we have a long-standing reputation for quality and care – both in the malt we produce and the people we employ.

We’re proud that many colleagues choose to spend much of their careers with us, meaning a wealth of knowledge and expertise is continuously passed on to the next generation.

We’re a Certified B Corporation and how we treat our workforce is a key part of that assessment framework.

We’ve also been officially recognised as a Great Place to Work® – an accreditation that was awarded following a survey completed by colleagues.

A range of roles

In our unique position as both a malting and merchanting business, there is a great variety of roles available spanning a host of different departments.

We offer apprenticeships and also have temporary summer work available at our grain storage sites for the busy harvest period, giving the next generation the skills, support and experience to build a career with us.

Grow with us

We have long considered our workforce to be key to our success and we invest significantly each year to ensure that they are informed, engaged, equipped and empowered in the workplace.

Each year, we run a range of development programmes, including team leader and management apprenticeships, along with industry recognised courses such as the Fundamentals in Malting (FIM) and Certificate in Malting Competence (CMC).

We also support our agronomy team through qualifications including BASIS and FACTS, helping us to bolster the technical offering we can provide to our contracted growers.

So, whether you’re at the start of your career or looking to develop your skills further, you’ll be supported to reach your potential with us.

Rewarding our colleagues

At Simpsons Malt, great work and dedicated service is recognised and rewarded.

Each year, we operate a Company Performance Award (CPA) – a discretionary annual bonus scheme based on how the business performs against its financial targets. This means that when the business performs well, our colleagues share in that success.

All colleagues are also enrolled into our defined contribution pension scheme, with a two-for-one match up to 8% employer contribution. This helps our colleagues plan for the future with confidence.

An annual long service awards dinner is also held celebrating key milestones of employment that colleagues have achieved during the calendar year.

Supporting wellbeing

We’re committed to supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of our colleagues and, more widely, their families.

All colleagues receive access to Plumm Health, an online mental health platform offering therapy chat, wellbeing tools and guided support. With our Family Access plan, team members can extend these benefits to up to three adult family members, recognising the role home life plays in overall wellbeing.

We also provide access to the Foresight Cash Plan from Westfield Health, which helps cover everyday healthcare costs such as optical, dental and therapy treatments. The plan includes Doctorline, a GP service offering phone or video consultations.

As an additional resource, we also have First Aid and Mental Health First Aid qualified colleagues within the business.

It’s all part of our commitment to creating a workplace that puts people first.

Additional benefits

There are a host of additional benefits that full-time colleagues have access to and these include:

  • Octopus EV Salary Sacrifice Scheme: A valuable benefit enabling colleagues to get a zero-emission car in return for sacrificing an amount of their salary.
  • Bike Scheme: A Government-backed initiative, colleagues save up to 42% on the cost of a bike and cycling safety accessories providing the bike is used for cycling to work.

  • Gym Scheme: Access to discounted gym memberships at more than 3,500 participating gyms.
  • Tech Scheme: A voucher worth up to £500, repayable over 12 months via salary deductions, making it easier to access new technology.

  • Westfield Rewards: Exclusive discounts at hundreds of popular retailers, restaurants and leisure providers.

By giving colleagues the ability to personalise the benefits that matter most to them, Salary Extras strengthens our overall employee value proposition.
