Farm Sustainability Assessment

Since 2020, we have worked alongside our contracted growers to help them attain verification to SAI Platform's Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA).

FSA is a globally-recognised and highly effective standard that helps farmers and food and drink companies around the world produce, sell and source more sustainably grown agricultural products.

Unlike other verifications which only consider feed and food safety, FSA offers a comprehensive, industry-wide assessment with three levels of FSA performance: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

We’ve currently got two active Farm Management Groups (FMGs), which achieved the following results when audited:

FMG - Distilling Wheat

FMG - Malting Barley

126 growers

678 growers

Audited in 2024

Audited in 2025

100% FSA Gold

100% FSA Gold

By achieving 100% FSA Gold across both groups, it demonstrates that growers are operating to first-class sustainability standards across a wide range of environmental, social and economic criteria.

This includes soil and nutrient management, crop protection, biodiversity, community impact and employee welfare.

It also demonstrates engagement with a Simpsons Malt-led continuous improvement plan, while showing compliance with a trusted, globally recognised framework that assesses the whole farm business rather than individual crops.

For our distilling and brewing customers, meanwhile, the verification provides confidence that malting barley processed at both our malting sites has clear assurance and supply chain traceability.

It is also helping to support our customers towards meeting their own sustainable sourcing objectives.

In 2024, we were thrilled to be announced as the winner of the Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA) Growing A Better Planet Award for our commitment to supply chain sustainability.

The global award celebrates organisations and farmers who demonstrate leadership and innovation in advancing on-farm sustainability.

As a long-time advocate of the FSA – evidenced through our Farm Management Groups across malting barley and distilling wheat – we're delighted that our efforts have been acknowledged on this international platform.
