What are adjuncts in brewing?
Unmalted adjuncts are additional sources of starch that complement the main barley malt in the mash.
They enhance foam stability, mouthfeel and flavour and can dial in texture, colour and fermentability across a wide range of beer styles.
They have also traditionally offered brewers practical and some financial advantages through extending brewhouse capacity, balancing nitrogen levels and providing greater control over the finished beer.
Working in partnership
Unlike all of the other products in our range, we don't produce our unmalted adjuncts in-house. Instead, we work with trusted industry partners who share our commitment to supplying quality products.
Our flaked products are steam-treated and rolled, a process that softens the grain and part-gelatinises the starch, making it mash-ready without the need for milling.
Torrefied Wheat, meanwhile, is made by heating raw wheat at high temperatures similar to light roasting, which removes most of the moisture and partially cooks the starches without gelatinising them fully.
These products bring foam stability and a creamy, grainy texture and complement our range of high-quality malts.
