Low Colour Golden Promise®™

Low Colour Golden Promise® Malt is a heritage malt that offers the same premium sweet, clean and slightly nutty malt character as traditional Finest Pale Ale Golden Promise®, but with a lighter colour (max 3.5 °EBC) for brewers seeking a paler, more delicate malt profile.

This makes it ideal for light, hop-forward styles such as Hazy IPAs, New England IPAs and crisp Golden Ales, where a soft malt backbone supports vibrant hop expression without adding too much colour or biscuity richness.

Compared to Finest Pale Ale Golden Promise, Low Colour Golden Promise is lighter in hue and slightly more fermentable, producing a crisper finish with less residual sweetness. Against Extra Pale Ale Malt, meanwhile, although similarly pale, Low Colour Golden Promise provides a more rounded, slightly sweeter profile, making it a great choice for brewers who want brightness without sacrificing malt character.

Furthermore, as we own the Golden Promise variety, supply seed through our agricultural merchanting division McCreath Simpson & Prentice (MSP) and purchase the barley direct from trusted growers each year, we can offer full traceability and sustainability data on the finished malt.

“No other malt gives the same exceptional flavour to our beers that Golden Promise provides and that’s why we’ve used it for more than 40 years.”

The story of Golden Promise

Golden Promise®™ was first released as a barley variety in the UK in the 1960s. Soon, it became revered for its distinct brewing and distilling qualities.

More than half a century later, Golden Promise®™ is still a name that is synonymous with brewing. As a base malt, it is coveted by some of the world’s leading brewers.

As the Plant Variety Rights holder of Golden Promise®™, we've pulled together an article outlining the complete story of this heritage malt.
