Low Colour Maris Otter

Low Colour Maris Otter Malt delivers the same iconic biscuity depth and full-bodied character as Finest Pale Ale Maris Otter, but with a lighter colour (max 3.5 °EBC).

This makes it perfect for brewers seeking Maris Otter’s signature malty richness in paler styles like Golden Ales, Pale Ales, Hazy IPAs and New England IPAs, where malt complexity is desired without deepening the beer’s hue.

When comparing it to Low Colour Golden Promise, Low Colour Maris Otter has a more pronounced biscuit character and a touch more structure while, against Extra Pale Ale Malt, it offers more depth, making it an excellent choice for modern pale beers that still need a hint of malt complexity.

“Many years ago, we trialled a range of malts and Maris Otter came out on top – it just makes better beer. I’m a big advocate of using Maris Otter from Simpsons Malt and I see no reason to use anything else in the future.”

Rob Lovatt, Production Director, Thornbridge Brewery

“Low Colour Maris Otter brings a depth and complexity you just don’t get from other malts. It’s the foundation of all our recipes – even our lagers. It delivers great extract and consistent quality and flavour that our customers really appreciate.”

Alex Barlow, Head Brewer, Triple Point Brewing Co.

About Maris Otter

Maris Otter was first bred in Cambridge in 1965 by Dr G.D.H. Bell, who crossed the Proctor and Pioneer varieties with the single purpose of producing a barley variety that would give a consistently high-quality malt for the traditional cask ale market.

Renowned for its distinct sweet, biscuity character and dependable performance, Maris Otter quickly became the foundation of Britain’s finest beers.

Although the variety was removed from the official Recommended List in the early 1990s, two agricultural merchants – including our Maris Otter supplier Robin Appel Ltd  approached original owner PBI with the purpose of rejuvenating the variety to satisfy demand and continue its legacy.

That certainly happened. Maris Otter celebrated its 60th birthday in 2025 and the exclusively English-grown heritage variety continues to offer a unique combination of low nitrogen with high extract potential.

It remains the base malt of choice for a range of breweries – from multi-generational family businesses to modern craft operations – who value the depth of flavour and brewhouse consistency that has earned it global recognition.
