Malt of the Month: Crystal Light Malt

We’ll be exploring a different malt every month as part of our Malt of the Month series – exploring the taste, flavour and usage of a whole variety of malts for you brewers out there interested in exploring different versions.

We’re kicking off 2018 with Crystal Light Malt. Created at our Tivetshall Maltings, it is made with barley sourced from nearby fields.

Our crystal malts are used by the finest Brewers around the world, as they’re known for the unique house sweetness and flavour.

A low colour crystal, Crystal Light Malt has a clean, mild sweetness.  It’s known for bringing a depth of flavour to brews where extra body is required, without adding overtly toasted or roasted characters.

Taste & flavour

Taste and flavour is paramount when it comes to choosing a malt for your next brew.  We like Crystal Light Malt because of the caramel and toffee taste it brings to every beer.  It has also been described as having a dried fruit (mainly apricots) or nutty flavour.

Usage

Used at 5%-15%, Simpsons Malt Crystal Light Malt is ideal for creating India Pale Ales (IPA), known for being a moderately-strong, hoppy style of beer within the pale ale category.  Crystal Light also provides a great taste to Best Bitters and Brown Ales.

Customers

Firestone Walker Brewing Company is a big advocate of the Simpsons Malt Crystal Light Malt.  The Firestone Union Jack IPA is just one example of an award-winning brew the brewery has used Crystal Light to create.

Head brewer Matt Brynildson said: “it provides a beautiful golden colour without adding astringency or dominating the flavour profile of our beers.”
